Let's be straightforward about this 1885 CC $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle coin—it falls under the category of a D.O.G. (Dirty Old Gold). With fewer than 400 surviving examples in all grades from a mintage of less than 10,000, it holds a position in the top third of overall rarity. Carson City Double Eagles carry historical importance, as the mint in Carson City operated from 1870 to 1893, playing a pivotal role in converting locally mined gold and silver into coins. Collectors are drawn to the charm of the 'CC' mint mark and its connection to the Old West heritage. These coins retain their value through time in a way that no other mintmark can, serving as tangible artifacts of a bygone era.

This specific coin is entirely original, with some dirt still visible between the devices on the reverse. Remarkably problem-free, it exceeds expectations for a rare date. The last two non-CAC PCGS comparable sales were $22,200 in March 2023 and $26,400 in August 2022, also at Heritage Auctions, and are pleased to offer under auction comps.
